The 3rd Islamic Solidarity Games 2013
September 22nd 2013 – October 1st 2013 at Jaka Baring Complex, Palembang, South Sumatera

The Islamic Solidarity Games is a multinational, multi-sport event. The Games involve the elite athletes of the Organisation of the Islamic Conference. The Islamic Solidarity Games Federation (ISSF) is the organisation that is responsible for the direction and control of the Islamic Solidarity Games.

History
The first ISG was held in 2005, hosted by Saudi Arabia. At that time, the Organization of Islamic Conference had 57 member states. Non-Muslim athletes in member states are also allowed to take part in the Games.

The second ISG event was originally scheduled to take place in October 2009 in Iran. After postponing the date to April 2010, it was canceled after a dispute between Iran and the Arab World over the naming of the Persian Gulf as featured on the logo for the Olympics. Several Arab countries used the term “Arabian Gulf” to refer to the Persian Gulf instead. This disagreement has become a source of disharmony between the Arab countries and Iran.

3rd ISG 2013
The 3rd ISG will take place between 22 September and 1 October 2013 in Palembang, South Sumatra, Indonesia. South Sumatra, which has previously hosted the SEA Games XXVI/2011 was appointed as host of the ISG by Presidential Decree (Decree) on July 29, 2013. The Executive committee official website can be viewed at www.inaisgoc2013southsumatera.com.

The Indonesian contingent expects a strong showing to place in the top 10, an improvement over their 18th place in the previous Games at Saudi Arabia. The host nation will compete in all 13 sports events: athletics, swimming, archery, badminton, football, tennis, wushu, beach volleyball, volleyball, basketball, taekwondo, karate, and weightlifting.

The 3rd ISG 2013 will be contested by 44 participating nations and feature 13 sports events: athletics, swimming, archery, badminton, basketball, soccer, karate, taekwondo, tennis, volleyball, beach volleyball, weightlifting and wushu. 589 athletes are taking part in the competitions out of a 1,743-strong contingent of athletes and officials. The first ISG sporting event commences September 15, a full week before the opening ceremony.
